Canadian information sources

CAMline is a database on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). It serves as an information resource to support healthcare professionals in their day-to-day practice, aids in the drafting of effective health care policy and supports consumers in making informed decisions about their health.

The Canadian Natural Health Coalition provides information about the effects of Bill C-51.

The Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research (IN-CAM) has undertaken the mission to foster a sustainable, well-connected, highly-trained CAM research community in Canada that is internationally recognized and known for both its excellence in research and its contributions to understanding CAM and its uses. Their website provides many links to Canadian CAM news, information sources, conferences and education opportunities and organisations, and lets you access the IN-CAM outcomes database.

Toronto Public Library, like many libraries in Ontario, offers members a wide range of databases. Using your 14-digit library card and 4-digit PIN, you can access magazines, journals and other information sources for free. Contact your local library for more information.     Find it in the list of databases under "Health — Consumer Health Complete". It provides easily understandable health and medical information from medical encyclopedias, popular reference books and magazine articles.
  • Health and Wellness Resource Center

International information sources

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is an the US federal government's lead agency for scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Their aim is to explore complementary and alternative healing practices in the context of rigorous science, to train complementary and alternative medicine researchers, and to disseminate authoritative information to the public and to professionals. MedLinePlus' centre on complementary and alternative medicine provides a good jumping-off point for research into many different aspects of CAM and integrative health. The clear, well-written overviews and more detailed information are also available in Spanish. Be aware that legislation, health-care system information and discussions of insurance do not apply to Canadians, however.

United Kingdom's National Library for Health Complementary and Alternative Medicine Specialist Library provides access to good quality, up-to-date, relevant information on complementary and alternative medicine. The content of the library is intended primarily for health professionals, CAM practitioners and researchers, but the majority of the information is also accessible by patients, carers and the general public.

Journals

BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine is an open access journal publishing original peer-reviewed research articles in complementary and alternative healthcare interventions, with a specific emphasis on those that elucidate biological mechanisms of action.

Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies Journal (FACT) is one of the very first journals to focus on issues related to CAM research. Based in Great Britain, FACT aims to impartially present evidence-based CAM information and promote discussions on methodological issues. Includes book and research reviews, news and interviews. Free.

International Journal of Naturopathic Medicine is a peer-reviewed journal with the latest CAM information. A subscription is required to access any information.

Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine is an evidence-based journal that examines the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative medical (CAM) whole systems, practices, interventions and natural health products, including herbal medicines. Summaries of each article are published in easy-to-understand language, and some articles are translated into other languages.
